Larry Magid: Snowden Offers SXSW Crowd Online Privacy Advice

CBS San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— The South By Southwest (SXSW) Interactive Festival is underway in Austin and National Security Agency (NSA) leaker Edward Snowden is telling people how they can protect their privacy online. But how is he being perceived by the tech community?

Snowden spoke via video conference to a crowd at SXSW and probably his most memorable line will be, and I paraphrase, that the NSA is setting fire to the future of the internet and that the folks at SXSW are the firefighters.

He did get applause from that line, which in essence is his belief that the NSA challenges freedom by allegedly spying on people, not only in the U.S., but abroad on their Internet capable devices.

We know that Snowden, whether you consider him a whistle-blower or someone who committed treason, has revealed a lot of information about the NSA and has made claims against them, some…

COPING WITH SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST: A STUCK IN NEW YORKER’S GUIDE

photo

Perhaps you’ve noticed a tumbleweed or two roll through the vast wasteland of this week’s New York showlistings. Maybe all of your friends are out of town until next Sunday. Probably you’re there right now, taking a selfie at Whataburger.

If you’re not at South By, this is likely a trying time for you. You’ve spent weeks listening to people planning their itineraries in bodega lines and coffee shops. You’ve had friends excitedly tell you their work was sending them there. You’ve had those same friends detail their future Whataburger orders in explicit detail.

Other people here will tell you that South By is a whole bunch of corporate bullshit and this is of course 100% the truth. After all, we’re talking about a festival where homeless people were once sent to wander around as Wi-Fi “hotspots.” This year boasts not only the particularly loathsome hashtag #SXSubway, but an appearance…

Audio Polished Edward Snowden SXSW Presentation

Jason Koblovsky

In August last year I wrote a post regarding the Lack of Privacy Is A Matter Of National Security . A lot of Snowden’s presentation does touch up on that subject regarding mass surveillance making our communications systems less secure.  You can also view Snowden’s written testimony to the EU Parliament here.  The EU will be voting on a resolution on Wednesday to delay trade agreements with the US over mass surveillance, and stripping US companies from immunity over legal liability over EU citizens privacy.  It’s worthy to note, that the EU also has Canada’s privacy laws in it’s sights as well.

Snowden’s SXSW presentation is about an hour long presentation, however a must see for those of you in the tech development fields.  An earlier copy of Snowden’s presentation today released by the ACLU was very hard to understand due to the audio eco’s.  Here is a more cleaned…

The Botchway Show

Well isn’t this a pleasant surprise. Despite Kanye telling Power 99 FM that he and Jay Z have yet to begin working on the sequel to their Watch The Throne album, DONDA creative director Virgil Abloh has already given us the artwork to the upcoming album. With ‘Ye and Hov set to headline Samsung’s concert series at SXSW on March 12, one begins to wonder if we can expect new music sooner than later.
